This site is not an official site for IPRO, owner of Eclipse SE software. To go directly to their website, please click here.

Eclipse SE vs. Eclipse SQL/Web

Here's a comparison chart that hopefully helps a little. The primary differences between the two are:

  • SQL/Web is SQL based
    • SE is flat and proprietary
  • SQL/Web has analytics, to include near duping, email threading, clustering, etc.
    • SE does not have any analytics
  • SQL/Web can import/load data, native files and images via a load file (or transfer from eCapture)
    • SE can import/ingest data, native files (to include PST files) and images directly into the program for review

Eclipse and Eclipse SE Comparison

For many law firms, litigation review is the most time consuming and expensive portion of litigation, making up approximately 70% of the total costs of document production. To alleviate this pain, IPRO has developed powerful litigation review applications purpose-built with cutting-edge features which allow law firms to streamline their workflow, reduce inefficiency and save time and money throughout the review process. While Eclipse SQL is a web-based review application intended for enterprise-wide deployment, Eclipse SE is perfect for firms looking to implement an advanced in-house review platform that can fit into their current infrastructure. Service Providers have the option to host using Eclipse SQL or resell Eclipse SE for clients looking for alternatives.

Eclipse SQL

Eclipse SQL is a feature-rich review platform that allows for collaborative attorney review of image or native files over a network or internet connection. Eclipse SQL combines proven advanced analytic technology with standard linear workflow to help achieve the most efficient review while gaining the best understanding of your case evidence. Using the advanced analytics functionality found in the Eclipse SQL review application to prioritize and predict responsive documents, law firms are able to complete better reviews quickly and defensibly.

Eclipse SE

Eclipse SE is an in-house discovery, review, and production platform built to handle any size case and any number of users within your current infrastructure, without requiring a SQL server or dedicated DBA. The high-speed, self-contained database found in Eclipse SE handles native file ingestion, unitization, document review, transcript management and full production effortlessly, offering a true all-n-one litigation platform.

Significance

Database Backend

SQL

"flat file" / Btree

SQL is a Microsoft product, whereas Btree is proprietary. SQL will have functionality that is both limited and limitless. Btree allows IPRO to develop functionality that SQL products wouldn’t be able to do.

Case Size

No Limit

<10M Records

While SE has that limit of less than 10M records, I have yet to work on a case that’s reached that. You would definitely want to get the SQL version for any cases reaching that number, probably for different reasons, such as Web capability.

Concurrent Users

No Limit

<50 Users

Integration for Large Scale ESI Processing

Allegro / eCapture

eScan-IT

Allegro and eCapture are optimized to work seamlessly with SQL, since they too are SQL products. Both software will work with SE, but you will need to export data, then import it into SE. On the other hand, eScanIT has been optimized to work seamlessly with SE.

Permissions-Based Security Model

Personal, Group and Case-level security

Administration

Review Passes / Batch Review

Y

Y

Allows for better organization of review passes and allows for accountability of reviewers

Unicode Compliant

Y

Y

An industry standard, most significant for allowing use of foreign languages for document review.

Ingest Native ESI Directly (Small-Scale)

N

Y

SE can import/ingest PST files and MSG files, where it processes metadata appropriately; as well as a large list of a variety of file types. SQL cannot. You will need to purchase an ingestion/processing tool (if needed to process files internally), or outsource such, for the SQL version. SQL is often paired with industry-best tools, like eCapture and/or Allegro.

Ingest Images/OCR

N

Y

SE also allows for the importing of 8 image types and OCR at import, whereas SQL cannot.

Transcript Management Module

Y

Y

Transcripts can be loaded, organized, searched, work product managed, and reports created.

Review

Review Sessions

Web-based

Desktop-based

This is perhaps the most significant difference, after the ingestion features. If you need web- or browser-based access, SQL is the only choice.

Image View, Near-Native (Stellent), Native File support

Y

Y

Both versions allow for the viewing of all/any versions of a document.

View Produced Versions of Image within Review Module

Y

Y

Both versions allow you to view all produced versions of a document, where the production was done using either product.

Private/Smart Folders for Document Organization

N/Y

Y/Y

Private folders allow for easy creation and drag-and-drop capability of documents into that folder. Smart folders allow for creation of folders, where the folder contains multiple tags or categories. The bests example is creating a Smart folder for all documents where there are multiple basis for privilege.

Tiff-on-the-Fly

Y

Y

Where you decide to conduct a native file review only, this feature allows you to create an image of the native file, most probably for purposes of needing to redact a document.

Custom Coding Forms Associated with User’s / Review Pass

Y

Y

This allows you to create custom coding forms, and manage them, and also allows you to copy them from case to case.

Persistent Keyword Highlighting

Y

Y

Allows you to identify and enter keywords, specific to the case, where those terms will be highlighted when conducting document review.

Document Unitization

N

Y

This features allows users to split documents easily or combine documents easily. OCR text, coding and tags can also be split.

Email Image

N

Y

SE allows a user to quickly email a document to themselves or other persons.

Replication

N

Y

SE has a replication feature built-in. SQL requires an additional purchase.

Analytics

Document Clustering

Y

N

Common keyword concepts are clustered into groups of documents, for purposes of helping reduce review time.

Document Categorization

Y

N

Near-Dupe Detection

This feature allows you to see other documents that have the same/similar text within the document.

Content-Based Email Threading

Y

Allows for burning in of many different elements, to include also, page or document tags, fielded info, as well as custom text.

Searchable PDF (PDF/A compliant)

Y

Y

Searchable text can be created for any version of images, to include PDFs and TIFs, for production purposes.

Re-OCR Option for Redacted Text

Y

Y

When producing searchable text, there are several options available to ensure the redacted portion of an image will not be produced.

Exports industry Standard Load File Formats

Y

Y

Allows you to export for Summation, Concordance users, among others.

Summary

Eclipse SQL is Web-based, and allows for the use of analytics. It does not allow for native file or image ingestion directly, but needs a load file (or eCapture).

Eclipse SE allows for native file and image file processing/ingestion directly into a case. It’s easy to install and deploy. Allows for unitization. It does not allow for web access, nor does it have analytics.
